Benefits of Double Glazed Windows – A Summary

We are certainly dependent on the windows of our home or business to provide light and protection from the elements. There are many kinds of windows but the double glazed window is a very popular type. Let’s explore why this is so and some examples of this kind of construction.

A double glazed window is basically a window which is formed by two panes of glass with a space in between. This space is normally a few millimeters thick. Air is trapped in this space and forms an insulating layer. Right before the window unit is sealed, a small amount of material is added to space which acts as a drying agent so that no moisture will form and potentially fog up the glass panes.

It is very important to note that a double glazed window must be airtight. This prevents moisture from forming between the panes. If this does occur then the seal has been broken and the window unit must be replaced. Unfortunately it cannot be repaired normally.

Double glazed windows have an important advantage over other types of windows. One of the most important is their ability to minimize heat loss through the glass. A conventional window with a single glass pane allows up to 60% of the heat to escape.  But a double glazed window can limit this loss to around 10% to 12%.

So while a double glazed window usually costs quite a bit more than a conventional single pane window, the savings in heat loss will quickly more than make up for this extra upfront cost.

Another advantage of double glazed windows is their ability to limit the spread of carbon dioxide emissions to the atmosphere. It has been found that our homes actually create a fair amount of carbon dioxide but these windows help to limit these emissions.  So they are friendly the environment.

And these kinds of windows provide an extra degree of security and protection. As it turns out, most intruders enter a home through windows and doors. Double glazed windows are difficult to break and are therefore an effective barrier against unwanted entry.

This type of window also provides an extra degree of protection against flying debris. This is especially important if you live in a hurricane zone and like the idea of the extra protection against wind and flying debris. There are even special types of double glazed windows which have impact resistant panes. This often avoids the need for panels to be fitted over the windows in the case of a hurricane or severe storm.

There are many styles of double glazed windows to choose from. Their frames can be constructed from plastic, aluminum or hardwood. And these frames come in a wide variety of colors and textures. See your local window specialist for more details.  They will have many styles and types to choose from and can help you to determine which ones are best for your needs.

In addition check out the many resources on the Internet. There are a number of fine online retailers who specialize in these kinds of windows. You can measure the opening yourself if you wish with the aid of detailed instructions the retailer can supply. Or you can have a qualified installer do this for you.

But by dealing with an online retailer you can often save yourself money over other options. And the variety of styles and types is very extensive through these sources.

Either way the use of double glazed windows provides a great deal of beauty, energy efficiency, environmentally friendly and security for all kinds of homes and businesses. If you don’t already have double glazed windows, you should seriously consider upgrading to this type. The expense of purchasing them will be quickly paid for by the benefits they bring.
